Puerto Morelos has many great places to eat, and today we are going to tell you about one of our favorites: El Merkadito restaurant.
El Merkadito is located on the beach of Puerto Morelos, and has openings on three sides. The deck offers fantastic views of the Caribbean Sea no matter where you’re sitting. Occasionally some musicians might stroll by, offering you their services of a few songs while you sit and admire the great view.
As you would expect from a fishing town like Puerto Morelos, this place’s specialty is seafood, and they serve up all the dishes that you would expect to find in a Caribbean restaurant. Their tostados come with a variety of choices, such as smoked tuna, octopus, yellow tail tuna carpaccio, smoked salmon and crab. Or if you prefer tacos instead try their shrimp tempura, marlin, octopus with garlic or crispy pork tacos. They serve ceviche, of course and shrimp cocktails. To go along with your meal choose between beer, margaritas, various flavors of water, or soft drinks.
El Merkadito’s hours of operation are 12.00pm to 9 p.m. Monday to Sunday, making it ideal for lunch, dinner, or a light snack in the afternoon. The place is easy to find; once you reach the town square walk about half a block on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar where you will find the street entrance. You can also walk in directly off the beach. Expect to pay between $150 to $200 pesos average for a meal. Individual tostadas are priced at $58 pesos and up.
Weekends are always the busiest time, so a visit during the week will give you the fastest service and most peace and quiet. Afterwards you will understand why Puerto Morelos is attracts so many people, and El Merkadito represents the best that this small town has to offer.
