La Casa del Habano is a successful chain of stores focused on the pleasures of smoking cigars, and you will find one located on the island of Cozumel. But don’t let that put you off should you not partake, because they also have a great restaurant with a terrific menu, and are conveniently located on the island.
Gate 48 is a 30 minutes drive from the ferry terminal of Playa del Carmen, which is where you need to go to cross the waters to the island. You can purchase your ticket at one of the booths near the entrance, the trip across is 55 minutes. Once you disembark the boat, head for the corner of Avenida Melgar and Juarez. La Casa del Habano’s food menu boasts a rich fusion of food combining the best from Cuba and Italy. Antonia Meschi is the resident chef. Lobster and oysters among his specialties. Try the clam dish, served cold, open shelled and with a spicy sauce on the side with oil and cilantro.
For the main course we recommend the pasta and the beef cheek. The pasta is fresh made in-house by the chef and tossed in olive oil, white wine, shrimp, clams and mussels. The beef are braised slowly overnight in a red wine sauce, served with a nice red wine demiglaze, mashed taters and a salad. For dessert try the chocolate souffle.
Weekends are filled with the sounds live music. Beginning at night you can expect to hear rock and pop, some salsa, and performed by a variety of bands, five days a week from Wednesday to Sunday. If you don’t know how to dance salsa and wish to join in you can take a lesson here, the have group salsa classes 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
La Casa del Habano has a walk-in Humidor, where they keep their cigars in optimum conditions of temperature and relative humidity. They also have a locked humidor where guests can store their cigars, a sales area, and a tasting room where liquors can be tried with a cigars such a Cohiba, Montecristo, or a Romeo y Julieta,
