How to Undergo a Digital Detox During Your Vacation

In today’s blog we are going to talk about a subject that may be difficult for some in this hyper-connected, modern day world. As a visitor to the Gate48, you are most likely here to enjoy some sun, warm weather, good local food, and some time to relax. So in the spirit of trying to disconnect from the hectic pace of life back home, we’d like to suggest something that may be hard for you to do: undergo a digital detox.

You could make this a part of your New Year’s resolution, or simply apply it to the time you spend here in the Riviera Maya. But if you want to get the most out of your vacation here and must use technology to keep up with what is going on back home, we have some suggestions on how to do it.

During your normal waking hours back home you may be glued to a screen for a large portion of the day, accustomed to check it last thing at night and first thing in the morning. It is also quite likely that you take it out while eating a restaurant. So while you are our guest here at Gate48, follow these tips and enjoy going to bed without worrying about messages, checking email regularly:

  1. Set a time limit by giving yourself prescribed amount of time per day that you will spend on devices.
  2. Turn off your cellphone before going to bed at night and put it away somewhere out of sight, like in a bag or suitcase. If you must know the time or require an alarm to wake up consider purchasing a travel alarm clock.
  3. Change your morning ritual. The key here is to NOT check your phone as the first act of the day. Create a routine based around your vacation time, so go get up and go for a for a swim at the pool or at the beach, have a shower, eat breakfast, get dressed and be ready for your day. Only after this should you check in on your digital profiles and messaging.
  4. Tell your friends and family that are vacationing with you what you are doing and encourage them to do the same. At the very least, ask them to support your efforts, even if it’s by eliminating usage during mealtimes or during trips to the beach. This will help ensure that you can make the most of your time here in the Riviera Maya.
