Are you looking for a unique place to dine in Playa del Carmen that serves a menu of traditional food that goes well beyond the norm of what you might expect in a Mexican restaurant? In today’s we will introduce you to La Perla Pixan, located in downtown Playa del Carmen.
La Perla Pixan is known as a gastro mezcaleria, which is dedicated to the culture of artisanal mescal. Readers of our blog will already know that mescal is an alcoholic drink which come from the same maguey plant that tequila is made. They have several brands available which can be ordered straight or as cocktail drinks. We recommend their version of a Bloody Mary, made with tomato juice, mescal and spices. Pulque is another traditional alcoholic drink that can be found here.
The food menu is a fusion of traditional and regional Mexican cooking. Their breakfast menu contains traditional Mexican dishes and items, such as organic eggs, coffee from Chiapas, chocolate from Oaxaca, fresh fruit and juice, and sweet bread.
For lunch and dinner try their Tlayuda, a Oaxancan dish made with a fried tortilla that covered with beans, chorizo, beef, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, cilantro and avocado. We also recommend the Perla lasagna, which is made from a stack of fried tortillas covered in greens, cheese and sauce. But the thing that really sets La Perla Pixan apart from other Mexican restaurants are their more unusual menu items that you wont find elsewhere, such as sautéed grasshoppers and various insect tacos!
La Perla Pixan is open Tuesday-Sunday, from 8:00am-12:00midnight, and are located in downtown Playa del Carmen on 34th St, between 5th Avenue and 10th Avenue. On many nights they feature live music from local bands and musicians. They also have a play area for kids, which make the restaurant family friendly. It’s recommended that you make a reservation in advance as they can get quite busy. For more information visit them on their Facebook page: Laperlapixan.
