Once you’ve arrived and checked in at Gate48, I’m sure you will be excited to begin your adventure by checking out the famous beaches of the Riviera Maya. But with a coastline that stretches from Tulum to Puerto Morelos, where do you begin? Luckily for you we have put together a list of our 5 favorite beaches, all of which are easily accessible from Gate48, along with the driving time from TAO.
Akumal (10 min)
The name of this beach means “Land of the Turtles”, so named because it is a favorite spot for turtles to come and lay their eggs. It’s no wonder they have picked this pot: the water is crystal clear, making it a favorite for people who want to go snorkeling. It’s also possible to swim with turtles in their natural environment all year round.
Xpu-Ha (15 min)
When you arrive at this beach in the morning the water is so still that it resemble a swimming pool. There is only one major hotel, and during the week there are very few people around. There are two entrances where you will have to pay a fee to get in, but it is applicable to food or drink consumption. There are two beach clubs with sunbeds and also a rental shop for paddle boards and windsurfing, with onsite professional instructors for those who are new to the sport.
Tulum (Paraiso) (25 min)
It has been rated as one of the top five beaches in the world several times and it’s no wonder: Paraiso Beach in Tulum is a calm, relaxing experience of bohemian paradise. Soft white sand and turquoise waters surrounded by the ancient Mayan ruins make this a place that must be visited to appreciate the beauty of the region.
Mamitas (40 min)
Located on Calle 28 in the centre of Playa del Carmen, this is the most popular spot in the city. The property itself is a sprawling beach club, with sunbeds and full service food and drinks. Every year they host to the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival and have guest DJs playing every weekend. It tends to attract a young a crowd that wants to party and socialize, so head down if you’re in the mood to have fun!
Puerto Morelos (1 hr)
To get here from TAO take the highway northbound to Cancun. After about an hour you will arrive You are now in quaint, charming, and tranquil Puerto Morelos! The Mesoamerican Reef is 500 m off the shore, which is a great place for snorkeling and checking out the tropical fish and corals, or go visit the pelicans that hang out by the pier.
